Bond Mobility

Bond Mobility established a presence in the micromobility sector by offering station-less, high-speed e-Bike sharing services. Founded in Switzerland in 2016 by Raoul Stöckle, Corinne Vogel, Nick Müller, and Horace Dediu, the company also established headquarters in Palo Alto, California, reflecting its transatlantic ambitions. One of the founders, Horace Dediu, is widely credited with coining the term "micromobility," highlighting the team's deep roots in the urban transportation space. Another founder, Raoul Stöckle, a serial entrepreneur with a background in physics and chemistry, brought experience from founding other ventures, including a green electricity trading platform.

The company's business model revolved around providing a fleet of premium, Swiss-designed e-Bikes capable of reaching speeds up to 45 km/h (approx. 30 mph). This positioned Bond's service as a direct competitor to car trips for urban journeys under six miles, a longer range than typical micromobility options cover. Revenue was generated from private customers on a pay-per-use basis and through B2B partnerships with major corporations like Google and Siemens. The service operated via a proprietary full-stack platform, encompassing both the hardware of the e-Bikes and the software for fleet management. A key feature was its AI-based system that used smart incentives to encourage users to rebalance the fleet, a critical factor for achieving operational profitability in the station-less sharing model.

Bond Mobility actively pursued growth through strategic acquisitions. In June 2020, it acquired Belgian mobility tech company e-motionlabs to enhance its technological capabilities and engineering capacity. This was followed by the August 2020 acquisition of the data fusion and predictive analytics solution from Roll2Go, an ETH Zurich spin-off, further strengthening its data-driven approach to fleet management. A significant milestone was the closing of a $20 million Series A funding round in May 2019, led by automotive supplier DENSO and Ininvest. This investment was intended to fuel expansion into new cities and accelerate the development of DENSO's Mobility as a Service (MaaS) model.
