About Bonac

Bonac Corporation was a Japanese biotechnology firm specializing in the research, development, and manufacturing of nucleic acid medicines. Founded in February 2010 by Hirotake Hayashi, the company was headquartered in Kurume, Fukuoka. Bonac focused on creating next-generation pharmaceuticals using its proprietary "Bonac nucleic acid," a structurally distinct and stable form of single-stranded RNA, for which it secured patents in Japan, the United States, and Europe. This technology aimed to treat diseases by suppressing the expression of specific genes that cause them, leveraging the RNA interference (RNAi) mechanism.

The company's business model included the manufacturing of nucleic acid drug substances, drug development support, and licensing its patented technologies. Bonac targeted a range of diseases, including viral infections, genetic disorders, and cancer. Notably, the firm engaged in the development of a treatment for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which entered clinical trials in the US. It also ventured into creating cosmetic ingredients by combining its nucleic acid technology with natural materials from Okinawa, resulting in products with moisturizing and anti-aging properties.

A significant project for Bonac was the development of an inhaled COVID-19 treatment, undertaken in partnership with the Fukuoka prefectural government. This initiative received a substantial 50 billion yen in funding from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). Despite its promising technology and backing from major corporations like Sumitomo Chemical and Toray, Bonac faced challenges. After the COVID-19 treatment development plan stalled, the company's revenue plummeted from over 500 million yen in fiscal 2018 to approximately 2 million yen in fiscal 2022. Subsequently, Bonac filed for bankruptcy in February 2024 with liabilities of around 1.5 billion yen.
