Bluesmart's flagship product was a carry-on suitcase featuring a range of digital capabilities. These included GPS and 3G-based location tracking, a battery charger for electronic devices, a remote-locking function, and integrated digital scales for weight measurement. The business model centered on direct-to-consumer sales of this high-tech travel gear. The company's market entry strategy utilized crowdfunding to great effect. In October 2014, Bluesmart launched a campaign on Indiegogo, reaching its funding goal within two hours. The campaign ultimately raised over $2.2 million from more than 10,000 pre-orders across 114 countries, which at the time was a record for a travel product on the platform. Following this success, the company was accepted into the Winter 2015 batch of the Y Combinator accelerator program. The first units of the Bluesmart One suitcase began shipping in August 2015. The product line later expanded to include the Bluesmart Black Edition and a Series 2 line with a cabin bag, checked bag, laptop bag, and passport pouch.
The company's trajectory was abruptly altered by a shift in airline regulations. In January 2018, major U.S. airlines implemented a ban on smart luggage with non-removable lithium-ion batteries due to fire safety concerns. This policy directly impacted Bluesmart's core product, as its battery was integrated and not designed for easy removal by the user. Although the company provided instructions on how to manually extract the battery, this was a cumbersome process for customers and negated the product's primary features. The regulatory change created an insurmountable business challenge, and on May 1, 2018, Bluesmart announced it was ceasing operations. The company's intellectual property, technology, and branding were acquired by luggage manufacturer Travelpro.
