BlueData Software
Transforms how firms deploy their big data applications
About BlueData Software
BlueData Software, established in 2012, emerged from the vision of Kumar Sreekanti and Tom Phelan, both seasoned veterans from VMware. Sreekanti, who served as the CEO, previously led the development of VMware's virtual appliance and management products as the Vice President of R&D. Phelan, the Chief Architect, was a key contributor to VMware's core virtualization technologies, including the ESX Server. Their collective experience in virtualization and enterprise software laid the groundwork for BlueData's core mission: to simplify the deployment of big data analytics and machine learning applications.
The company identified a significant challenge for enterprises: the complexity and high cost associated with deploying and managing big data infrastructure. To address this, BlueData developed a software platform that leverages container technology, specifically Docker, to create on-demand, elastic environments for data-intensive applications. This approach allowed data science teams to rapidly spin up clusters for tools like Spark, Hadoop, and TensorFlow within minutes, a process that traditionally took weeks or months. The platform effectively separated the application layer from the underlying infrastructure, enabling analytics to run on-premises, in the public cloud, or across a hybrid model without being locked into a specific hardware or cloud provider.
BlueData's business model centered on providing enterprise-grade software that offered agility and cost-effectiveness. It catered to large enterprises with data science and analytics teams, enabling them to accelerate their AI/ML and big data initiatives. The core product, the BlueData EPIC (Elastic Private Instant Clusters) software platform, provided a multi-tenant architecture with robust security and governance features, which were critical for enterprise adoption. This allowed IT departments to maintain control while giving data scientists the on-demand access they required. After demonstrating significant market traction and securing a strong customer base, BlueData was acquired by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) in November 2018. The acquisition was a strategic move for HPE to bolster its capabilities in the hybrid cloud and AI/ML markets. Post-acquisition, BlueData's technology has been integrated into the HPE Ezmeral software portfolio, specifically forming the basis of the HPE Ezmeral Container Platform and HPE Ezmeral ML Ops, continuing its legacy of powering enterprise AI and analytics workloads.
