About Blippy Social Commerce

Blippy was a Palo Alto-based social media company that allowed users to publicly share their credit card and debit card purchases. Founded in December 2009 by Ashvin Kumar, Chris Estreich, and Philip J. Kaplan, the platform was often described as the “Twitter of personal finance” for its open sharing model. The co-founders included Ashvin Kumar as CEO and Chris Estreich as CTO.

The company launched with $1.6 million in financing from venture capital firms like Charles River Ventures and Sequoia Capital, as well as angel investors including Evan Williams of Twitter. Blippy's service operated by linking to a user's credit card, Amazon, or other retail accounts and automatically posting their transactions to a public feed. The stated goal was to foster discussion and comparison shopping among users. By January 2010, the platform had already showcased over $1 million in user purchases. The business model was anticipated to involve selling aggregated, anonymized spending data.

However, Blippy faced significant challenges. In April 2010, a major privacy issue occurred when the full credit card numbers of four users were accidentally exposed and indexed by Google. The company acknowledged the mistake, which happened during a beta testing period. Despite its initial traction, Blippy struggled with user engagement. By May 2011, it had approximately 100,000 registered users, but only 30% had ever shared a purchase. Faced with declining relevance and an inability to grow its user base, the company announced it was pivoting away from its initial product. The Blippy service was officially shut down in May 2011.
