The company was founded by Jacob Schuler, an engineer with over 20 years of experience in product development, who was motivated to create the product after a 2021 wildfire near Spokane, Washington, demonstrated the limitations of manually digging fire lines.

The core product is a portable, modular system described as a "fire-line-in-a-box". It consists of biodegradable cardboard modules filled with a non-toxic fire-retardant powder, strung together in 25-foot lengths that can be deployed in under a minute. When flames make contact with the modules, they activate and propel the retardant powder, creating a 10-foot-wide barrier that extinguishes the fire and coats surrounding vegetation to prevent re-ignition. This provides a significantly wider break than the standard 18-inch hand-dug fire line. The entire system is biodegradable, with the powder acting as a fertilizer, eliminating the need for cleanup.

The Spokane-based startup targets homeowners, firefighting agencies, utility companies, and railroads as its primary clients. Blaze Barrier Inc. secured $300,000 in a pre-seed funding round led by Avista Development to refine the product design and prepare for manufacturing. The business model includes direct sales to consumers and agencies through its website, as well as retail channels like Amazon and distribution partners. The company aims to partner with insurance firms to potentially lower premiums for homeowners in high-risk areas.
