The company was established in 2020 by co-founders Will Clem and Orin Wilson, emerging from a practical need identified within Clem's own restaurant chain, Baby Jack's. The initial concept was proven when Clem, a third-generation restaurateur with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and experience as a co-founder of Memphis Meats, successfully took drive-thru orders from home via his laptop. Wilson's background in finance, data, and technology complemented this operational insight, leading to the formalization of the business.

The core of Bite Ninja's service is a platform that connects restaurants with a pool of thousands of U.S.-based, trained remote workers, or "Ninjas," who handle order-taking for drive-thru and front counter operations. These Ninjas interact with customers via on-screen video, freeing up in-store staff to concentrate on food preparation and fulfillment. This model addresses persistent industry challenges such as labor shortages and the high costs associated with employee turnover. Restaurants can access this on-demand workforce to cover shifts, manage peak hours, and improve order accuracy and upsell rates. The business generates revenue by charging restaurants an hourly rate for the remote staff, which can operate on a surge pricing model similar to ride-sharing services during high-demand periods.

Since its inception, the company has achieved significant milestones, including participation in the Y Combinator accelerator program and securing substantial funding. Bite Ninja raised $675,000 in a pre-seed round, followed by a $4 million seed round, and later an $11.3 million bridge round, bringing its total funding to $15.4 million by August 2022. Key investors include Owl Ventures, AgFunder, Manta Ray Ventures, and Pioneer Fund. In March 2025, it was announced that Bite Ninja was being acquired by Voicify, a company specializing in conversational AI for the drive-thru, with the goal of creating a hybrid solution combining human remote workers with artificial intelligence.
