Biotrend Energy, a subsidiary of Doğanlar Holding, was established in 2017 to focus on integrated waste management and renewable energy generation in Turkey. The company operates as a key player in the Turkish biomass market, converting municipal and industrial waste into electricity. Since its founding, Biotrend has expanded its portfolio to include 17 facilities across 9 provinces, encompassing integrated waste management, energy generation (including biomass and biogas), solid fuel preparation, and even greenhouse operations. This rapid expansion included the commissioning of multiple landfill gas and biogas power plants in cities like Izmir, Balıkesir, Uşak, and Aydın. A significant milestone was its initial public offering on the Borsa Istanbul in April 2021, which was followed by an equity investment from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Biotrend's business model is centered on a bio-circular-green economy, turning waste into value-added products and energy. The company enters into long-term Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreements with municipalities for waste management and energy production from landfill gas. Its primary revenue stream is the sale of electricity generated from its power plants, which benefit from the government's Renewable Energy Support Mechanism (RESM). Diversifying its income, Biotrend also generates revenue from waste separation, the production of refuse-derived fuel (RDF), carbon credit sales, and is developing capabilities in chemical recycling. The company holds a significant reserve of saleable carbon credits, providing an additional source of income.

The core service is the conversion of waste into energy through various technologies. Its facilities process organic waste, agricultural residues, and municipal solid waste using methods like anaerobic digestion for biogas, combustion, and gasification. The captured biogas and heat are used to power turbines that generate electricity, supplying power to hundreds of thousands of households. Beyond electricity, the company utilizes waste heat from its plants for sustainable agriculture in greenhouses. A key initiative is the development of a chemical recycling plant in partnership with Honeywell, which will use advanced pyrolysis technology to convert mixed plastic waste that cannot be mechanically recycled into recycled polymer feedstock. This venture represents a strategic move to address plastic pollution and further embed circular economy principles into its operations.
