About Bioconnect Systems

Bioconnect Systems, Inc. was a medical device company that developed novel surgical implants and techniques for creating precisely controlled vascular connections. Founded in 2006 by Adam Dakin and headquartered in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, the company focused on pioneering methods for microvascular surgery. Dakin, a career medical technology entrepreneur, co-founded three device companies and raised over $30 million in early-stage capital. His background in developing products for orthopedics, cardiology, and neurology informed the company's direction.

The company's core product was the Optiflow™ family of sutureless anastomotic connectors, designed to provide a rapid and repeatable method for connecting blood vessels. These devices were developed to improve the performance of arteriovenous fistulae and vascular access grafts, particularly for patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). The technology aimed to replace traditional suturing, which can be time-consuming and technique-dependent, with a faster, safer, and more reliable mechanical connection. In September 2010, Bioconnect Systems received CE Mark approval for its Optiflow Anastomotic System.

Bioconnect Systems operated in the medical technology market, specifically targeting vascular surgery applications. Its business model centered on the development and eventual sale of its proprietary surgical devices to hospitals and surgical centers. The company successfully raised a total of $17.6 million over four funding rounds from investors including Cardinal Partners, F-Prime Capital, Eight Roads Ventures, and Ben Franklin Technology Partners. Despite its developments and funding, the company ceased operations and is now considered deadpooled as of December 2014.
