Bio Architecture Lab
Bio Architecture Lab is engaged in the development of low cost, scalable, and sustainable biomass
About Bio Architecture Lab
Bio Architecture Lab (BAL) was established in 2008 by founder Yasuo Yoshikuni, with its headquarters in Berkeley, California. The company set out to apply synthetic biology and enzyme design for the development of biofuels and renewable chemicals derived from aquafarmed, native macroalgae. This feedstock is positioned as a low-cost, scalable, and sustainable form of biomass. In May 2010, Daniel Trunfio was appointed as the company's CEO. Another key figure, Ric Lucien, also served as CEO at a later point.
BAL's core business revolves around its proprietary technology platform, which has been engineered to metabolize all the sugars present in brown seaweed to produce fermentable sugars. These sugars can then be converted into biofuels like ethanol and isobutanol, as well as other renewable chemicals. The company has highlighted that seaweed is an advantageous feedstock because it contains up to 60 percent fermentable carbohydrates, lacks lignin, and does not require arable land or freshwater for cultivation. BAL has actively partnered with global players in the aquaculture, chemical, and petroleum industries to advance the production of sustainable fuels and chemicals.
A significant milestone for the company was the feature of its technology in the peer-reviewed journal Science Magazine, which described the successful bio-engineering of a microbe that digests all resident carbohydrates in brown seaweed for renewable fuel production. In December 2011, BAL broke ground on an experimental pilot facility in the Los Lagos region of Chile, which was expected to be operational in 2012. This facility was designed to demonstrate the complete value chain, from seaweed farming to biofuel production. By that time, the company was already operating three seaweed farms in Chile. In a strategic shift announced in May 2013, BAL began leveraging its expertise to operate as a Contract Research Organization (CRO), offering its synthetic biology and technical services to industrial and specialty manufacturers worldwide.
The company's operations have been supported by a series of funding rounds and grants. This includes a $1.5 million seed round in March 2008 from Mohr Davidow Ventures and XSeed Capital, grants totaling $9 million in 2009 and 2010, and an $8 million Series A round in November 2009 from investors including Austral Capital, Energy Capital Management, and XSeed Capital. Over its active years, the company raised a total of $39.6 million. According to records, the company's operating status is now listed as closed.
