Big Bear Networks developed and manufactured electro-optical modules and subassemblies designed for high-speed fiber optic networks. The company specialized in solutions for systems operating at 10 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s, focusing on its proprietary photronic signal processing (PSP) technology. This technology was engineered to overcome signal degradation over fiber-optic links, enabling telecommunication carriers to build longer and faster networks with reduced capital and operational costs.

The company's product line included the Kodiak 40/43G transponder, a 40 Gbit/s MSA-compliant pluggable module used for interconnecting core routers and transmission systems in both intra-office and metro networks. As an integrated circuit company, Big Bear Networks designed its own silicon devices, including high-performance gallium arsenide modulator drivers and central multiplexing units, to handle optical issues with electronic solutions.

Founded in Sunnyvale, California, the company secured significant venture capital funding to commercialize its technology. It raised $60 million in its first two rounds from investors such as Accel Partners, Austin Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Oak Investment Partners, and Sequoia Capital. A subsequent Series C funding round in November 2003, led by Menlo Ventures, brought in an additional $18 million.
