BIBA Apparels
Designer and retailer of women's ethnic apparel in india
About BIBA Apparels
In 1988, with a loan of just ₹8,000 from her husband, Meena Bindra started a small clothing business from her home in New Delhi. Nearing 40, with her sons grown, she simply wanted to earn some pocket money by designing and selling simple, elegant salwar-kameez sets. She named her brand BIBA, a Punjabi term of endearment for a pretty woman, capturing the essence of her brand. Bindra identified a gap in the market for ready-to-wear ethnic apparel at a time when most women relied on tailors. Her focus on accessible, stylish, and comfortable designs quickly found an audience. The business grew, and in 1997, her son, Siddharth Bindra, joined with the goal of transforming the home-grown venture into a national brand. The first exclusive BIBA store opened in Mumbai in the early 2000s, marking a significant step in its expansion. A major turning point came in 2013, when private equity firms Warburg Pincus and Faering Capital invested ₹300 crores, which was the largest private equity investment in the Indian ethnic wear sector at the time. This investment fueled the brand's expansion across India and provided an exit for an earlier investor, Future Group. Although BIBA filed papers for an IPO, the public offering was later cancelled.
