About Beyond Oblivion
Beyond Oblivion was a digital music startup that operated in the early 2010s, positioning itself as a potential competitor to services like iTunes and Spotify. The company was founded by Adam Kidron, a serial entrepreneur and former pop record producer, who conceived of the business model on a spreadsheet. His core idea was to create a service that felt free to the end-user by shifting the cost to hardware manufacturers and network operators.
The company's business model was a hybrid between download and streaming services. It proposed a system where users could download and share music freely among licensed devices. Instead of charging consumers directly through subscriptions or per-track fees, Beyond Oblivion planned to license its platform to device makers or network operators. These partners would then bundle the music service with their products, subsidizing the cost. A key component of this model was the tracking of every song play, which would generate royalties for the rights holders, regardless of how the music file was obtained. This approach was designed to monetize even illegally downloaded or shared files by reporting play-counts back to the copyright owners.
Beyond Oblivion managed to secure significant financial backing, raising approximately $87 million in total. A major funding round in March 2011 brought in $77 million from a consortium that included media giant News Corp, investment bank Allen & Co., and digital rights management firm Intertrust Technologies. This capital was intended to acquire worldwide content rights and fund the commercial launch of the service. The company had deals with major music labels and a catalog of over seven million tracks.
Despite the substantial investment and a compelling vision, the company ceased operations abruptly in December 2011, just weeks before its planned public beta launch. A more modest version of the service, rebranded as "boinc," eventually launched in Venezuela in 2013, utilizing the design of the original MVP.
