About Bexion Pharmaceuticals

Bexion Pharmaceuticals is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, established in 2006 and headquartered in Covington, Kentucky. It was founded by Dr. Ray Takigiku, an entrepreneurial life scientist with over three decades of experience in pharmaceutical discovery and development, including a role on the leadership team for the blockbuster drug Actonel at P&G Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Takigiku's scientific background is foundational to the company's focus on developing treatments for cancer. The company's initial technology was licensed from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

The company is concentrated on developing biologic therapies for solid tumor cancers and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Bexion's business model revolves around the clinical development and eventual commercialization of its proprietary drug candidates. Its primary market includes patients with various solid tumors, such as metastatic colorectal cancer, glioblastoma, and pediatric brain tumors, as well as those suffering from debilitating neuropathy as a side effect of chemotherapy. Bexion has received funding through various rounds, including grants from the National Cancer Institute and The Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Bexion's lead product candidate is BXQ-350, a first-in-class biologic drug. It is a proprietary nanovesicle formulation composed of Saposin C (SapC), a human lysosomal protein, and the phospholipid dioleoylphosphatidylserine (DOPS). The mechanism of action for BXQ-350 involves modulating the sphingolipid metabolism pathway, which is often disrupted in cancer cells. It works by increasing levels of pro-apoptotic ceramide while decreasing oncogenic sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), thereby creating an anti-tumor environment that encourages programmed cell death. A key feature of BXQ-350 is its dual potential: not only does it exhibit anti-tumor activity, but it also shows promise in alleviating CIPN. This neuroprotective property could allow patients to better tolerate chemotherapy regimens. BXQ-350 has completed multiple Phase 1 clinical trials in adult and pediatric patients, demonstrating a favorable safety profile, and is currently in Phase 1b/2 trials for metastatic colorectal cancer.
