About Bellwave Co

Bellwave Co., Ltd. was a South Korean mobile phone manufacturer established on September 8, 1999, by Kigon Yang. The company specialized in the development of GPRS phone services and the production of wireless communication devices, including GSM mobile phones and CDMA wireless data modules. Bellwave quickly established itself, releasing the 'Happy Talkie' location tracking device which won a New Technology Award, and developing a wireless modem for repeater monitoring.

The company demonstrated significant growth in its early years. By 2001, it was recognized as an excellent technology company and began exporting CDMA mobile phones to China. A major milestone occurred in 2002 when Bellwave attracted a substantial foreign investment of 16 billion won from Japan's Softbank, propelling it to become a leading export venture company with an export performance of $64 million. This period of expansion included becoming an official sponsor of CIC and opening a Beijing office. The company's focus on research and development is evidenced by its patent filings for technologies such as methods for controlling display and backlight in portable terminals. In November 2004, the headquarters relocated to the Camco Yangjae Tower in Seoul.

Despite its early successes and venture capital backing, Bellwave faced challenges that led to its decline. On May 30, 2006, the company was acquired by Telit Communications in a deal valued at $6.18 million. Following the acquisition, the company's operations continued for a few years. However, after suspending the launch of new products, Bellwave was put up for sale in 2009. Negotiations for a takeover by SK Telecom, a previous outsourcing partner, were unsuccessful. Ultimately, the company ceased operations and was dissolved on December 31, 2009, after failing to secure a buyer.
