Beats Music

Outside Tech · San Francisco, United States · Founded 2013

Website providing online music streaming service, centered around curated playlists created by musicians and music writers MoreLess

Beats Music was a subscription-based music streaming service that combined algorithmic personalization with human curation. The service was an extension of the Beats by Dr. Dre brand, founded by music producer Dr. Dre and record company executive Jimmy Iovine. The duo established Beats Electronics in 2006, perceiving a gap in the market due to the impact of music piracy and the subpar audio quality of typical consumer earbuds. Their goal was to create a comprehensive, end-to-end music experience, which led to the expansion from audio hardware into the digital music streaming market.

The development of Beats Music, codenamed "Daisy," began in 2012 following the acquisition of the online music service MOG for a reported $10 million to $16 million. This acquisition provided the technological foundation for the new streaming platform. The company enlisted digital music veteran Ian Rogers as CEO and appointed Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor as Chief Creative Officer to lead the service's unique approach to music discovery. Beats Music officially launched in the United States on January 21, 2014.

The service operated on a subscription model, costing $9.99 per month for unlimited, ad-free access to a library of over 20 million songs. Users could stream music on-demand or download tracks for offline playback on up to three devices. Unlike competitors that relied heavily on algorithms, Beats Music emphasized human curation. It employed a team of music industry professionals and journalists from publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork to create playlists. A signature feature was "The Sentence," which allowed users to generate playlists by filling in blanks related to activities, moods, and genres, creating a more interactive and personalized discovery process.

In May 2014, just four months after its launch, Apple Inc. announced its acquisition of both Beats Electronics and Beats Music for a total of $3 billion. This deal represented Apple's largest acquisition at the time. Following the purchase, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine joined Apple as executives. The acquisition was seen as a strategic move for Apple to bolster its position in the rapidly growing music streaming market and leverage the curation expertise of the Beats Music team. Beats Music stopped accepting new subscribers on June 30, 2015, to coincide with the launch of Apple Music. Existing subscribers were migrated to the new service, and Beats Music was officially discontinued on November 30, 2015, with its core features and curatorial philosophy becoming foundational elements of Apple Music.
