Founded in 2018 by Michael Wang, the company is headquartered in Beijing with a presence in California. Wang, the current CEO, leveraged his background in finance and investment to establish the firm. He holds a master's degree in engineering from Harvard University and a bachelor's from Tsinghua University, with prior experience at Goldman Sachs and as a founding member of Primavera Capital. This foundation in investment, particularly in technology and education, shaped Beacon's strategic direction.

The company's business model is centered on being a comprehensive Online Program Management (OPM) provider for non-Chinese universities seeking to enter the Chinese market. Beacon forms partnerships with universities to offer online undergraduate and graduate degrees to Chinese students and working professionals. Its revenue is generated through a suite of services provided to these partner institutions, which covers the entire student lifecycle. This includes robust marketing and recruitment to attract and enroll students, student support services, and academic assistance to ensure high retention rates. As of December 2020, Beacon had partnered with over 15 universities, including prominent names like Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania, to deliver more than 25 degree programs. These programs are concentrated in high-demand fields such as computer science, AI, business, and finance.

At the core of its offering is a proprietary cloud-based technology platform. This integrated system includes a learning management system (LMS), a live teaching platform, and a CRM, all optimized for the Chinese market. The platform supports both synchronous and asynchronous learning and provides deep analytics to personalize the educational experience. This technology suite is a key differentiator, enabling seamless delivery of international educational content within China's digital infrastructure. The firm's services extend to career guidance and the development of corporate content and university brand marketing. Since its inception, Beacon has secured $11 million in funding over three rounds, including a $6 million Series B round in December 2020 led by Redpoint China Ventures.
