About BCN3D
BCN3D, a Barcelona-based manufacturer of 3D printing solutions, originated in 2011 as a project within Fundació CIM, a technology center affiliated with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). The company was founded by Xavier Martínez Faneca, Eric Pallares Garcia, Roger Uceda, Pol Domenech, and Marc Felis Llena. It initially focused on Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technology through the open-source RepRap project. A significant milestone was the 2015 launch of the BCN3D Sigma, which introduced the company's Independent Dual Extrusion (IDEX) technology. In 2019, BCN3D officially spun off from CIM-UPC to become a standalone company, raising $3 million in a seed funding round. Subsequent funding rounds and public grants have supported its growth.
The company's core business revolves around the design, manufacturing, and distribution of professional and industrial-grade FFF 3D printers. Its revenue is generated from the sale of these printers, along with proprietary software, filaments, and accessories. BCN3D serves a wide range of clients, including professionals and industry-level users in sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, automotive, healthcare, and education. Notable clients have included BMW, NASA, Louis Vuitton, and Samsung.
BCN3D's key product differentiator is its patented IDEX technology. This system features two extruders that can operate independently of each other, enabling modes like Duplication and Mirror printing that effectively double production capacity compared to conventional dual extruder printers. This architecture also allows for cleaner multi-material and multi-color prints and the use of soluble supports for complex geometries. The product lineup includes the Epsilon series, designed for creating large-scale parts with industrial-grade materials, and the Omega I60, a high-speed industrial printer built for the factory floor. The ecosystem is supported by the BCN3D Stratos slicing software and the BCN3D Cloud platform for real-time printer management. In 2021, the company acquired AstroPrint, a cloud software company, to bolster its software offerings.
Despite its technological advancements and a strong client base, BCN3D filed for voluntary bankruptcy in May 2025, citing financial pressures and a failure to restructure its debt. This occurred despite a funding round announced in late 2024. However, shortly after the filing, a group of investors led by Francesc Adell Poch, founder of INTECH3D, submitted an offer to acquire the company's production unit, signaling a potential path to recovery and continued operations under new ownership.
