Built-in Inflatable Neck Pillow that easily hides inside the hood of the jacket
About Baubax
BauBax is a product design company specializing in functional travel apparel and accessories. The firm gained substantial market attention through a direct-to-consumer model, primarily leveraging crowdfunding platforms for product launches and initial sales. BauBax's business strategy revolves around identifying common travel inconveniences and engineering clothing and gear that provide practical solutions for commuters and globetrotters.
The company was founded in July 2015 by the husband-and-wife team, Hiral Sanghavi and Yoganshi Shah. The idea originated from Sanghavi's frequent business travel and his habit of repeatedly purchasing neck pillows at the airport, which prompted Shah, the lead designer, to envision a jacket with an integrated pillow. This initial concept evolved into a multi-feature travel garment. Sanghavi, a serial entrepreneur with a background in robotics education in India and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, took on the role of CEO, while Shah, with a master's degree in computer science, led the design. The founders' personal experience with the hassles of frequent travel directly informed the core product concept.
BauBax's flagship product, the Travel Jacket, became one of Kickstarter's most successful campaigns. The initial campaign in 2015, with a goal of $20,000, raised an astonishing $9.2 million, followed by an additional $2.3 million on Indiegogo. This initial jacket, offered in four styles (sweatshirt, windbreaker, bomber, and blazer), boasted 15 integrated features. These included a built-in inflatable neck pillow with a two-second inflation valve, an eye mask, gloves, earphone holders, and numerous specialized pockets for devices like a passport, smartphone, tablet, and sunglasses, and even an insulated drink pocket. A key design element was a zipper that doubled as a detachable telescoping pen and stylus. The success of the first jacket led to the development of the BauBax 2.0 in 2018, which expanded the feature set to 25, adding an inflatable footrest, a blanket, and dedicated pockets for Apple products like AirPods and the Apple Pencil. This subsequent campaign also saw significant crowdfunding success, raising nearly $4 million.
The company's revenue model is based on direct-to-consumer online sales, initiated through crowdfunding pre-orders that validated the product idea and generated initial capital without equity dilution. After the campaigns, products were sold directly through the company's website and other e-commerce platforms. Following its initial success, BauBax expanded its product line to include pants, shoes, and other travel accessories. The company operated primarily out of the Greater Seattle Area after starting in Chicago. In June 2020, BauBax LLC was acquired by BauBax Lifestyle LLC.
