Baofeng TV
Consumer Services · Dongcheng District, China · Founded 2015
Baofeng TV is an internet upstart company and operates as Baofeng's subsidiary MoreLess
Baofeng TV was the smart television and home entertainment division of the Baofeng Group, a Chinese technology company that initially gained prominence with its video player software. The television unit, operated by Shenzhen Baofeng Tongshuai Technology Co., was established in July 2015 as a strategic venture to enter the competitive internet TV market. This initiative was a key component of the parent company's broader "DT Big Entertainment" and later "All for TV" strategies, aiming to create a hardware and software ecosystem centered around the living room.
The company was spearheaded by Feng Xin, the founder and CEO of Baofeng Group. Before establishing Baofeng in 2007, Feng Xin had a diverse career, including a successful stint in sales at Kingsoft. He launched Baofeng TV in collaboration with several partners, including Haier's Ririshun and Ofèi Dòngmàn. To lead the new venture, Feng Xin recruited Liu Yaoping, a former executive from the traditional TV manufacturer Skyworth, who was known for his experience in launching the internet TV brand Coocaa.
Baofeng TV's product line consisted of smart TVs featuring artificial intelligence capabilities, voice assistants, and access to a wide array of content and services. The business model was similar to that of competitors like LeEco (LeTV) and Xiaomi, focusing on selling hardware, often at aggressive price points, to build a user base for its content and services platform. Revenue streams were intended to come from hardware sales, advertising, and value-added services on the TV platform. The company targeted consumers looking for feature-rich smart TVs integrated with online content, competing in a market that included both established electronics manufacturers and other internet companies.
Despite an aggressive market entry and ambitious goals, Baofeng TV faced significant financial challenges. The operating entity, Baofeng Tongshuai, reported substantial losses from 2016 through 2018. The parent company, Baofeng Group, also encountered a severe crisis, culminating in the arrest of founder Feng Xin in July 2019 and the company's eventual delisting from the stock market in 2020. By early 2020, Baofeng TV had ceased operations.
