About Baobei
Mia.com, originally launched as Miyabaobei, established itself as a significant player in China's cross-border e-commerce market, focusing on the mother and baby product sector. The company was founded in 2011 by Liu Nan, a former Dow Chemical Company employee who, as a new mother, became frustrated with the quality of domestic baby products available. Her journey began with personally sourcing and importing higher-quality foreign goods for her child, which evolved into a small but successful online store on the Taobao marketplace.
Sensing a broader market opportunity driven by widespread consumer concern over the safety and quality of local goods, Liu Nan transitioned her burgeoning Taobao business into an independent e-commerce platform in 2013. The platform, later rebranded to Mia.com, specialized in retailing imported, mid-to-high-end products for infants, toddlers, and mothers, including diapers, baby formula, clothing, and toys. The business model centered on direct sourcing of overseas branded products and reselling them to a growing base of middle-class Chinese parents who prioritized safety and quality. This strategy tapped into a powerful consumer trend, allowing the company to differentiate itself from larger, more generalized e-commerce giants.
The company's rapid growth attracted substantial venture capital, reaching a valuation of over USD 1 billion by 2015 and securing major investments from prominent backers like Sequoia Capital, ZhenFund, and Baidu. At its peak, the platform served over 50 million users and operated a business that included retail, private brands such as MAMA SELECTION, and membership marketing. However, the business faced significant headwinds from a confluence of factors, including China's declining birth rate, shifts in consumer shopping habits towards live-streaming and comprehensive e-commerce platforms, and intense market competition. In response to these challenges, Mia.com ceased operations of its main mobile app in September 2022, shifting its remaining activities to a mini-program on WeChat.
