An e-commerce retailer of baby products MoreLess
Baby.com.br was an e-commerce company headquartered in São Paulo, Brazil, that operated as an online retailer for baby products. The company was founded in October 2011 by American family members Davis Smith, and brothers Kimball and McKay Thomas. The idea originated while Smith was a student at the Wharton School and Kimball Thomas was at Harvard Business School. After exploring around 60 business ideas, they decided to focus on a baby products e-commerce website for the Brazilian market, a concept born from Smith's difficulty in finding baby diapers during a trip to Rio in 2010.
The business operated exclusively online, offering a wide range of products for babies and pregnant women, including clothing, footwear, toys, diapers, strollers, and health and hygiene items. Its business model was direct-to-consumer e-commerce, generating revenue from the sale of these products. The company aimed to address the challenge of finding quality baby products in Brazil, where they were often expensive and difficult to locate, particularly for the growing middle class. To build trust with consumers in a market skeptical of online shopping, Baby.com.br secured an endorsement from Brazilian celebrity Angélica, who became an investor and the company's "Chief Mommy Officer".
Baby.com.br secured significant venture capital, raising a Series A round of $4.4 million in February 2011 from investors including Tiger Global, Monashees Capital, and SV Angel. This was followed by a Series B round of $16.7 million in March 2012, led by Accel Partners. Over its lifetime, the company raised a total of approximately $21.1 million. Despite its initial success and rapid growth, the company faced a challenging and competitive market. In July 2014, the assets of Baby.com.br were acquired by its main competitor, BebeStore. Following the acquisition, co-founder Kimball Thomas transitioned to Dinda, a flash-sales site for maternal and baby products that Baby.com.br had started in 2012.
