Founded in 2005, Azalea Networks established itself as a specialized provider of mobile wireless mesh networking equipment. The company was co-founded by Frank Wang. Read full description
Azalea Networks developed and marketed a portfolio of wireless broadband mesh products, including both outdoor and indoor mesh routers, a proprietary operating system, and network management software designed to monitor and control the mesh network. The company's key technological differentiator was its ability to reliably carry latency-sensitive traffic, such as high-fidelity video and voice, over long distances across its wireless mesh infrastructure. This capability was demonstrated in demanding, large-scale deployments, including providing voice, video, and Wi-Fi access across 19 square miles of Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The business targeted clients with critical operational needs in rugged and expansive environments. Core markets included service providers, government agencies, and industrial enterprises in sectors such as oil and gas, manufacturing, mining, logistics, public safety, and transportation. For instance, the company supplied a large-scale wireless mesh network for the Daqing oil field in China to transmit remote well information via SCADA systems and high-frame-rate video surveillance. By 2009, Azalea had a customer base of over 140 companies and reported revenues of approximately $5 million.
In a significant milestone, the company secured $27 million in a Series A funding round on April 16, 2008, with investors including Authosis Ventures, SIG China, Parakletos Ventures, Rayson, and Innobridge. This investment fueled its growth until its acquisition by Aruba Networks, which was announced in May 2010 and completed in September 2010. Aruba acquired Azalea for approximately $27 million in stock and up to $13.5 million in cash, valuing the deal at a total of $40.5 million, to integrate Azalea's outdoor mesh technology and expand its own enterprise network solutions from indoor to outdoor industrial applications.
