In 1994, pilot and entrepreneur Dan Schwinn looked at the cockpits in most general aviation aircraft and saw an opportunity. He founded Avidyne with a mission to modernize avionics using advanced technology to make flying safer and more accessible. The company's first major breakthrough came in 2003 with the release of the FlightMax Entegra system in the Cirrus SR22. This was the first 'big glass' flight deck system for light general aviation, swapping traditional gauges for large, multi-function digital displays. This innovation was a significant contributor to the success of aircraft manufacturers like Cirrus. A key event in Avidyne's journey was its 2005 merger with Ryan International Company, the inventor of the Stormscope weather system. This move expanded Avidyne's portfolio of safety and situational awareness tools for pilots. While the company has received funding from institutional investors like Highland Capital Partners, it has remained privately held and has not undergone an IPO or acquisition. Avidyne has continued to innovate, introducing a range of products including digital autopilots, wireless connectivity, and advanced flight management systems. As of 2025, the company achieved FAA certification for its Vantage 12, a retrofit glass panel display for thousands of Cirrus aircraft, demonstrating its focus on upgrading the existing fleet of general aviation planes.
