Founded in 2007 by Avi Muchnick, Israel Derdik, and Michael Galpert, Aviary emerged with the objective of making professional-grade photo-editing tools accessible to a broad audience. The company developed a photo-editing platform available for iOS, Android, Windows, and web applications. Its product suite included a variety of user-friendly editing tools like custom photo filters, frames, graphics, and overlays.

A core component of Aviary's strategy was its free software development kit (SDK). This SDK allowed third-party developers to embed a customizable photo editor directly into their own applications across multiple operating systems. The business model for the SDK was freemium; developers could use the platform at no cost with Aviary branding or pay a monthly license fee for a white-label solution. This approach led to widespread adoption, with thousands of developers integrating Aviary's technology, resulting in the editing of over 10 billion photos through its service.

The company's growth was fueled by significant venture capital investments, including rounds in 2009 and 2012 featuring prominent investors like Spark Capital and Jeff Bezos. This trajectory culminated on September 22, 2014, when Adobe Systems acquired Aviary for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition was a strategic move for Adobe to enhance its Creative Cloud offerings, particularly for mobile applications, by integrating Aviary's technology and tapping into its extensive developer ecosystem. Following the acquisition, Aviary's platform was integrated into Adobe's Creative Cloud in November 2014. However, in December 2018, Adobe officially ended support for the Aviary product and removed it from download stores.
