About Avametric

Avametric, founded in 2012 by David Jackson and James O'Brien, developed a software platform focused on 3D renderings of apparel. The company's core technology originated from the ARCSims simulator developed in the lab of UC Berkeley Professor James O'Brien, who served as the company's chief scientific officer. Recognizing that algorithms for a robot's 3D environmental understanding could be applied to human forms, the founders developed technology to create highly accurate 3D images of clothing on customizable avatars. This addressed a key challenge in e-commerce: consumer confidence in virtual fit.

The firm's business was centered on providing fashion brands with tools for both enterprise and consumer applications. For businesses, Avametric offered a platform to automate content creation and enhance the efficiency of garment design and development. For consumers, the technology powered virtual fitting rooms, enabling shoppers to try on clothes on personalized 3D avatars, aiming to recreate the in-store fitting room experience online. This was designed to bridge the confidence gap for online shoppers, as data suggested that getting a customer into a fitting room significantly increases conversion rates. The company's revenue model was based on providing this proprietary software to fashion brands. In 2016, the company secured $10.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Khosla Ventures.

In October 2018, after a year of collaboration, Gerber Technology acquired Avametric. The acquisition was a strategic move to integrate Avametric's cloth simulation engine into Gerber's AccuMark 3D platform, creating an end-to-end 3D workflow from design to consumer. This integration allowed Gerber to connect its established AccuMark and YuniquePLM platforms with Avametric's consumer-facing virtual try-on software. The combined solution aimed to reduce the time and cost associated with physical samples by up to 50%, accelerate time-to-market, and enable personalized, on-demand shopping experiences.
