Atrium was a legal technology company founded in 2017 by a team that included Justin Kan, a co-founder of the live-streaming platform Twitch. Kan's previous success with Twitch, which Amazon acquired for nearly $1 billion, helped Atrium attract significant investor confidence. The venture was born from Kan's experiences as a founder and investor, which made him a power user of corporate legal services. His vision, driven by a desire to build a massive company, was to address the expensive and opaque processes within the legal industry.

The company set out to revolutionize legal services for startups by combining a traditional law firm with proprietary software. This hybrid model aimed to make legal processes more efficient, transparent, and affordable for its target clients. Atrium developed software to help startups manage fundraising, hiring, and collaboration with their legal teams. Revenue was generated through a monthly subscription model, with packages starting at $500, a departure from the standard hourly billing of most law firms.

Atrium secured a total of $75.5 million in funding from prominent investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, and Y Combinator. Despite this backing, the company faced significant operational challenges. It struggled to find a clear product-market fit and prioritized customer acquisition over perfecting its product, leading to high customer churn. A fundamental problem was the internal conflict over who to serve: the lawyers or the clients. The company also had difficulty demonstrating that its model was more efficient than a traditional law firm. In early 2020, after a failed pivot to focus solely on its software and professional services network, Atrium shut down its technology operations, laying off its employees. The independent law firm, Atrium LLP, was set to continue operating under its partners.
