About Atraverda

Atraverda Limited was a clean technology company, founded in January 2000, that focused on developing a commercially viable bipolar lead-acid battery. The firm's core intellectual property was Ebonex®, a patented, electrically conductive ceramic composite made from a titanium sub-oxide. This material was engineered to function as the bipole plate, a critical component that serves as both an electrode and a cell separator, addressing the corrosion and leakage issues that had historically hindered the development of bipolar lead-acid batteries. The company's technology offered a significant redesign of the traditional lead-acid battery, replacing numerous components with the single Ebonex® substrate. This approach promised to deliver batteries that were substantially lighter and smaller, with higher energy density and a longer operational lifetime, all while potentially reducing manufacturing costs by using less lead. Over its lifespan, Atraverda was led by a series of chief executives, including Andrew Loyns, Michael Gilchrist, Graham Ryan, and Tony Davies. The business targeted a wide array of markets, from mobility applications like e-bikes and wheelchairs to larger-scale systems for telecoms, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and domestic solar energy storage. Atraverda secured notable partnerships, including a collaboration with Sharp Laboratories Europe for an intelligent solar energy storage project backed by the UK's Technology Strategy Board. The company had also attracted millions in investment and was working with global battery producers to commercialize its technology. However, despite announcing plans for an upgraded battery in late 2013, the company entered administration and was officially dissolved following liquidation in March 2014. An associated entity, Ebonex Technologies Limited, also ceased operations in 2018, marking the end of the road for this specific branch of bipolar battery development.
