Atomos Space

Atomos Space, founded in 2017 by Vanessa Clark and William Kowalski, is a company focused on in-space logistics, specifically developing and operating orbital transfer vehicles (OTVs) to provide "last-mile" transportation for satellites. The firm addresses the challenge satellite operators face when relying on rideshare launches, which typically deliver payloads to a standard, non-prejudicial orbit that may not be the final desired destination. Atomos's service model involves its OTVs rendezvousing with and capturing client satellites in a provisional orbit and then transporting them to their precise operational orbit, a service that can potentially halve launch costs for customers deploying constellations.

The company's founding was driven by CEO Vanessa Clark's direct experience as an aerospace engineer, where she observed the interdependent limitations between launch vehicle and satellite design. Clark's extensive background includes work on spacecraft propulsion and space nuclear power systems at institutions like the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Airbus, and Lockheed Martin. Co-founder and COO William Kowalski brings a complementary skill set with a background in finance and a passion for physics and space policy. Their combined expertise addresses both the technical and the complex regulatory and financial hurdles of the space industry.

Atomos's core technology is embodied in its reusable, space-resident OTVs, which contrasts with single-use kick-stages. This reusability is central to its business model, aiming to amortize costs over many missions. The company is developing a line of vehicles, including the "Quark," a versatile OTV combining autonomous rendezvous and capture technology with high-thrust electric propulsion. For its initial demonstration mission, named "The Singing Astronomer," Atomos launched its Quark OTV and a target vehicle called "Gluon" in early 2024 to test rendezvous, docking, refueling, and orbital transfer capabilities. Atomos is also pursuing advanced propulsion technologies, including nuclear systems, to enable more ambitious missions in the future, such as transport to geosynchronous orbit (GEO) and deep space.

Financially, Atomos Space has secured significant backing, raising a total of $23.4 million over four funding rounds. A notable Series A round in January 2023, co-led by Cantos Ventures and Yamauchi-No. 10 Family Office, raised $16.2 million. The company has also won over $2 million in contracts from government bodies like NASA, the US Air Force, and the US Space Force. Operating from a 20,000-square-foot facility in Broomfield, Colorado, Atomos has vertically integrated its manufacturing and testing, including a unique Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) testbed called "The Void". In April 2025, it was announced that Atomos was acquired by Katalyst Space Technologies, a move intended to combine Atomos's OTV and rendezvous capabilities with Katalyst's focus on in-space servicing and satellite upgrades.
