Internet entertainment company that aggregates and distributes casual games MoreLess
Atom Entertainment emerged in 2001 from the merger of Atom Films and Shockwave.com. The company was founded by Mika Salmi, a Finnish-American entrepreneur who had previously founded AtomFilms in 1998 as a pioneering platform for short-form, user-generated content. Salmi's background in the music industry, where he worked with artists like Nine Inch Nails, informed his vision for providing a platform for independent creators. AtomFilms became an early online destination for aspiring filmmakers, even partnering with LucasFilm for the official Star Wars Fan Film Awards.
The company operated as a broadband entertainment network, providing a portfolio of online videos, web shows, animation, and short films. A significant part of its business was casual online gaming through its ownership of popular sites Shockwave.com and AddictingGames.com, which hosted thousands of free and downloadable games. The business model was largely supported by advertising, with opportunities for rich-media ads, brand sponsorships, and custom partnerships. They also offered subscriptions and sold short versions of their content for mobile devices.
Functioning as an aggregator and distributor, Atom Entertainment worked with independent creators to publish and distribute digital entertainment. Its primary assets included AtomFilms.com for short films and animation, AddictingClips.com for user-generated videos, and the casual gaming portals Shockwave.com and AddictingGames.com. This collection of properties attracted a large user base, with over 28 million monthly active users at its peak. The company's success and strategic position in the burgeoning online video and gaming market led to its acquisition by Viacom's MTV Networks in August 2006 for $200 million. Following the acquisition, AtomFilms was rebranded as Atom.com and repositioned as a sister site to Comedy Central, focusing on short-form comedy. Ultimately, in 2012, Atom.com was absorbed into Comedy Central and renamed CC Studios.
