Founded in 2006 by Chetan Venkatesh, Atlantis Computing specialized in software-defined storage (SDS) solutions aimed at optimizing data center operations and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Chetan Venkatesh, a seasoned entrepreneur with extensive experience in data infrastructure, served as the company's founder, President, and CEO, leveraging his background in computer science to develop its core technologies. The company secured approximately $35 million in venture capital over several funding rounds from investors including Adams Street Partners, Cisco Investments, El Dorado Ventures, and Partech.

Atlantis Computing operated in the business productivity software and data center optimization market, catering to large enterprise clients, including major global banks and government organizations. The business model centered on selling software licenses that enabled organizations to pool and manage their existing storage resources—such as SAN, NAS, and DAS—more efficiently, thereby reducing the need for expensive hardware upgrades. This approach allowed businesses to achieve all-flash storage performance at a significantly lower cost.

The company's flagship product line included Atlantis ILIO and Atlantis USX. USX, its unified software-defined storage platform, allowed businesses to pool various types of storage and create virtual volumes for any application. Key features included HyperDup for real-time deduplication and compression, which utilized server RAM to enhance storage performance and capacity. The platform also offered services like I/O acceleration, data mobility, and data protection. Later, the company introduced Atlantis HyperScale, a turnkey all-flash hyper-converged appliance that integrated servers, storage, and virtualization, which could be deployed on hardware from vendors like Cisco, HP, and Lenovo. A significant milestone was the acquisition of Atlantis Computing's assets by Hive-IO in July 2017. The deal aimed to expand Hive-IO's software-defined infrastructure offerings by incorporating Atlantis's advanced storage technology, particularly for VDI deployments.
