AstronauTx is a UK-based biotechnology company established in 2019, focused on developing treatments for neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease. The company spun out from University College London (UCL) and builds upon research from the Alzheimer's Research UK UCL Drug Discovery Institute (UCL DDI). Its co-founders include Dr. Ruth McKernan, former chair of Innovate UK, alongside academic founders Professor Paul Whiting, Professor Giles Hardingham, and Professor Shane Liddelow.

The company’s primary strategy is to develop a portfolio of small-molecule oral drugs that target astrocytes, the most abundant support cells in the brain. In neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, the normal, protective function of astrocytes becomes disrupted, contributing to nerve cell damage. AstronauTx’s therapeutic approach aims to modulate and restore the normal physiological behavior of these cells, which is expected to provide both symptomatic relief and disease-modifying benefits.

AstronauTx's business model is centered on the discovery and development of its drug pipeline to the clinical trial stage, financed through venture capital. The company was created by the Dementia Discovery Fund (DDF), a specialized venture capital fund, with initial seed funding from the UCL Technology Fund and the UK Future Fund. In October 2023, AstronauTx secured a significant £48 million ($61 million) in a Series A financing round. The round was led by the Novartis Venture Fund and included major pharmaceutical and venture capital investors such as Bristol Myers Squibb, Brandon Capital, and EQT Life Sciences. This capital is intended to advance its portfolio and move its lead program into a clinical study for patients with Alzheimer's disease.
