Arius Research
Biotechnology company developing antibody therapeutics
About Arius Research
Arius Research Inc. operated as a biotechnology firm focused on the discovery and development of monoclonal antibody therapeutics for cancer treatment. Founded in 1999 by David S. Young, who also served as President and CEO, the Toronto-based company emerged as a notable player in Ontario's biotechnology landscape. The firm's core asset was its proprietary technology platform, FunctionFIRST™, which was designed to rapidly identify and select therapeutic antibodies based on their functional ability to impact disease. This engine enabled the company to build an extensive portfolio of over 400 antibody candidates targeting various cancers, including breast, prostate, and liver cancers.
The company's business model centered on leveraging its FunctionFIRST™ platform for both in-house drug development and strategic collaborations with larger pharmaceutical companies. A significant partnership was established with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, which included upfront technology access fees, research funding, and potential milestone payments and royalties. Arius Research successfully raised capital through private placements, securing US$21.5 million in one 2006 financing round from investors such as OrbiMed Advisors, Xmark Opportunity Funds, and Efficacy Capital. The company faced significant challenges, including a moment when it was on the verge of collapse after a financial investor withdrew, a period during which employees accepted reduced salaries to ensure the company's survival.
A major milestone was the advancement of its lead anti-CD44 drug candidate, ARH460-16-2, into preclinical toxicology programs in 2007 in preparation for human clinical trials. This antibody targeted cancer stem cells, a key area in oncology research, and was patented in the U.S. for its composition and use in treating breast cancer. The company's progress and valuable technology platform culminated in its acquisition by Roche in September 2008 for approximately C$191 million. Roche acquired Arius to gain access to the FunctionFIRST™ platform and its pipeline, intending to bolster its own research and development portfolio in oncology and inflammatory diseases.
