Fundamentally redesigned water electrolysis to create the ideal platform for producing Green Hydrogen MoreLess

AquaHydrex was a developer of water electrolysis technology aimed at the production of green hydrogen, founded in 2012. The company originated as a spin-out from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES) at the University of Wollongong and Monash University in Australia. The foundational technology was the result of years of research at these institutions, focusing on novel catalytic processes to improve the efficiency of water electrolysis. The company was formed after securing venture capital from the US-based firm True North Venture Partners.

The firm's primary business was the development and commercialization of a redesigned high-pressure alkaline water electrolysis system. This technology was engineered to be an efficient, responsive, and inexpensive platform for large-scale green hydrogen production, targeting sectors such as power, fuel, agriculture, and chemicals. AquaHydrex’s approach was to re-engineer the electrolysis process from the ground up, aiming to minimize total project costs for clients. The company sought to overcome the limitations of traditional PEM electrolyzers, such as their reliance on expensive and rare metals like iridium. Its system was designed to be a more mobile and modular alternative.

Over its lifetime, AquaHydrex raised a total of $25.1 million in funding. A significant funding round in January 2023 was led by AP Ventures and included Aramco Ventures and existing investor True North Venture Partners. Key milestones included establishing a facility in Colorado in 2015, achieving proof-of-concept in 2018, and validating at-scale prototypes in 2021. Despite these developments, AquaHydrex filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in late 2023. Consequently, its assets, including intellectual property with over 25 patents, laboratory equipment, and proprietary designs, were liquidated via auction in January 2024. In May 2024, EDAC Labs announced it had purchased a significant portion of these physical and intellectual property assets.
