About Apportable

Apportable was a technology firm that provided a specialized development platform for mobile application creators, primarily targeting the gaming industry. The company was established in January 2011 by Collin Jackson and Ian Fischer and was headquartered in San Francisco. Jackson, who served as CEO, was previously a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University specializing in web security and mobile development, and was inspired to create Apportable after noting the significant delay for hit iOS games to appear on Android devices. Fischer acted as the company's CTO.

The core of Apportable's business was a compiler that enabled developers to convert applications written in Objective-C for iOS directly into native Android applications. This process eliminated the need for maintaining two separate codebases, one in Objective-C for iOS and another in Java for Android, thereby reducing development costs and time to market. The technology was designed to ensure that the resulting Android applications ran with native performance, avoiding the overhead associated with other cross-platform tools. The business model focused on offering its compiler and associated tools, with a free basic version and paid tiers for more advanced functions. Apportable's client roster included prominent game developers like Pocket Gems and Wooga, with titles such as Kingdom Rush and Osmos successfully using the platform to launch on Android.

Over its operational history, Apportable secured approximately $7.5 million in funding over three rounds from investors including Google Ventures, Y Combinator, and notable angel investors like Jerry Yang and Alexis Ohanian. A significant funding round in February 2014 raised $5 million, which was earmarked for platform development and team expansion. In January 2014, the company launched SpriteBuilder, a free game development suite for building both iOS and Android games from a single Objective-C codebase. This product was the result of consolidating several open-source projects, including Cocos2d and Chipmunk, under the Apportable banner. The company also offered a product called Tengu, which allowed for the reuse of Swift and Objective-C code. In March 2015, Apportable was acqui-hired by Google. The founders and a core group of 11 engineers joined Google to work on its developer tools, while the majority of the staff were laid off. Following the acquisition, Apportable's products were discontinued, and the company ceased active operations, maintaining only a small crew for technical support to existing enterprise clients.
