Apogen Biotechnologies, Inc. was a biotechnology firm focused on developing a new class of therapeutics to combat drug resistance in cancer. Incorporated in 2014, the company was founded by University of Minnesota researchers Reuben Harris, Ph.D., and Daniel Harki, Ph.D., along with life science entrepreneur John Santini, Jr., Ph.D. Harris, a professor of biochemistry, discovered the role of the APOBEC enzyme family in cancer development, while Harki, an assistant professor of medicinal chemistry, specialized in drug discovery and development to inhibit this enzyme. Santini brought executive and entrepreneurial experience from previous ventures in medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

The company's core technology centered on blocking the activity of the APOBEC enzyme, which was identified as a significant source of mutations in various cancers, leading to therapy resistance. By developing small molecule inhibitors for the APOBEC pathway, Apogen aimed to slow or prevent the evolution of cancer cells, thereby making existing and future treatments more effective. This approach was considered broadly applicable to many cancer types, including breast, lung, ovarian, bladder, and head and neck cancers. In addition to therapeutics, the company was also developing companion diagnostics to identify patients with tumors exhibiting high levels of the APOBEC enzyme, who would likely benefit most from these targeted therapies.

Apogen's business model was based on the discovery and development of these proprietary drugs and diagnostics. The company secured a worldwide, exclusive license from the University of Minnesota for its foundational APOBEC technologies. To finance its research and development, Apogen raised a total of $11 million in Series A funding across two rounds. The initial $7 million was raised in December 2016 from a syndicate of investors including Accelerator Life Science Partners, AbbVie Ventures, ARCH Venture Partners, and Eli Lilly and Company. An additional $4 million was secured in August 2018, with M Ventures leading the extension. These funds were intended to expand the team and establish a laboratory in Seattle. Despite its promising start, public records indicate the company ceased operations around May 2021.
