Apigee

Originally established as Sonoa Systems in 2004 by founders Raj Singh and Ravi Chandra, the company that would become Apigee started by developing router-like appliances for XML and SOA Governance. Chet Kapoor, whose career includes leadership roles at tech giants and inspiration from his time at Steve Jobs' NeXT, was brought on as CEO in 2006. The firm pivoted in 2009 with the beta release of a cloud-based API management tool named Apigee, which quickly became its primary focus. This strategic shift led to a formal rebranding as Apigee in 2010.

Apigee operates as a comprehensive API management platform, now integrated into Google Cloud, serving enterprises by enabling them to design, secure, deploy, and analyze their Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). The platform functions by creating an API proxy layer that sits between a company's backend services and the internal or external clients consuming those services. This allows businesses to manage the entire API lifecycle, from design and development to security, monitoring, and monetization, without altering their underlying backend systems. The business model is primarily subscription-based, with tiered pricing and pay-as-you-go options, supplemented by professional service fees. This model serves a wide range of clients, from developers and small businesses to large enterprises like Walgreens, AT&T, and T-Mobile, enabling them to connect legacy systems to modern applications and create new digital products.

The platform, known as Apigee X, provides a suite of tools for the complete API lifecycle. Key features include robust security protocols for threat protection, traffic management through rate limiting and quotas, and detailed analytics to gain insights into API usage and performance. Apigee also offers a developer portal to foster an ecosystem around a company's APIs, providing documentation and self-service key management. A significant differentiator is its monetization capability, allowing businesses to create tiered pricing plans for API access. Recently, Apigee has integrated AI to accelerate API development, act as a gateway for Large Language Models (LLMs), and enhance security. The platform supports REST, gRPC, SOAP, and GraphQL protocols and can be deployed in hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

The company's journey includes several key milestones, starting with raising over $173 million in funding before its public offering. Strategic acquisitions, such as Usergrid in 2012 and InsightsOne in 2014, expanded its mobile and predictive analytics capabilities. Apigee went public in April 2015, raising $87 million in its IPO. A major turning point came in November 2016, when Google acquired Apigee for $625 million, integrating it into the Google Cloud Platform to bolster its enterprise cloud offerings.
