Apex Group offers a single-source model for financial services, operating as a global provider since its establishment in Bermuda in 2003 by founder and CEO Peter Hughes. Hughes, a qualified chartered accountant, identified a service gap in the fund administration market, particularly for small and medium-sized asset managers who he felt were underserved by larger institutions. His prior experience as a CFO for a fund of funds group and his work at KPMG and Hemisphere Management informed his vision to deliver a higher, more consistent level of client service on a global scale with local expertise.

The firm has pursued a vigorous growth strategy, combining organic expansion with numerous strategic acquisitions. Since its inception, Apex has completed over 45 acquisitions, significantly broadening its service capabilities and geographic presence. Key acquisitions include Sanne Group, which positioned Apex as a top-tier global service provider; FundRock, a leading management company; and European Depositary Bank, which facilitates its banking and custody solutions. More recent acquisitions like Flow and Tokeny in 2025 underscore a commitment to integrating technology for private markets and tokenization solutions. This M&A strategy, supported by investors such as Genstar Capital, TA Associates, Carlyle, and Mubadala Investment Company, has been pivotal in transforming the business into a technology and data-driven services company.
