Aperi is a company that focuses on virtualized media production
About Aperi
Aperi Corporation was a specialized technology firm established in 2013 by brothers Eugene and Brian Keane, veterans of the broadcast technology sector with experience from Video Products Group and Nevion. Based in Camarillo, California, the company focused on the transition from traditional, hardware-based broadcasting to more flexible, IP-based workflows. Eugene Keane, who also has a background in construction management and international business development, initially led the company as CEO.
In a significant leadership transition in June 2016, Joop Janssen, an industry executive with over 25 years of experience, was appointed CEO. Janssen's career, marked by leadership roles at EVS, Vitec Videocom, and Philips Broadcast, provided Aperi with deep expertise in the media and telecom industries, aligning perfectly with the company's direction. This move was designed to scale the company after securing its initial customer installations and strategic funding.
The core of Aperi's business was its live IP Media Function Virtualization (MFV) platform. This technology brought the economic and agile principles of data centers to live media production. The platform enabled clients, such as broadcasters and service providers, to use software applications on generic compute and switch hardware, rather than relying on dedicated, function-specific equipment. This software-defined approach allowed for the processing of various media formats and standards, offering low-latency, virtualized solutions for mission-critical productions like live sports and news. Revenue was generated through a pay-per-use licensing model for its software applications, which could be instantly deployed, re-programmed, and scaled on demand.
Throughout its operation, Aperi secured key clients, including China's state broadcaster CCTV, and formed strategic partnerships. In July 2019, the company announced a funding round of over $10 million from venture capitalists to fuel its expansion. Despite its progress, in March 2020, Aperi's product portfolio, intellectual property, and brand were acquired by Net Insight, a Swedish media network company, for $1.2 million. This acquisition integrated Aperi's virtualized software architecture into Net Insight's media transport portfolio, with eight of Aperi's engineers joining the new parent company to ensure the continuity and development of the technology.
