Anuvia Plant Nutrients
Manufactures an enhanced efficiency fertilizer (EEF) for farmers, turf managers and homeowners to reach sustainable agriculture for a Growing Population
About Anuvia Plant Nutrients
Anuvia Plant Nutrients operated as a manufacturer of bio-based, high-efficiency fertilizers for the agricultural, turf, and lawn care sectors. The company was founded in 2005 by Jeffrey C Burnham, with Amy Yoder joining as CEO in 2015 to spearhead its commercial growth. Yoder, a sixth-generation farmer with over two decades of experience in the agricultural industry, including roles at Arysta LifeScience and Monsanto, was instrumental in shifting the company's focus from solely turf applications to the broader commercial agriculture market.
The company's core business revolved around a proprietary technology that converted organic waste materials—such as food waste, livestock manure, and other plant-based matter—into granulated fertilizer products. This process created a unique delivery mechanism called the Organic MaTRX™, which bound nutrients to electrostatically charged organic particles. The benefit was a slow, consistent release of nutrients, which improved uptake by plants, reduced nutrient runoff into the environment, and contributed to better soil health by returning organic matter to the soil. Anuvia's technology was noted for its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 32% compared to conventional fertilizers.
Anuvia's product lines included SymTRX™ for large-scale agriculture (used on crops like corn, rice, and cotton) and GreenTRX™ for the professional turf industry. Revenue was generated through the sale of these fertilizer products. The company established significant commercial agreements, including an exclusive licensing deal with The Mosaic Company for its SymTRX10S product, sold as Susterra™ by Mosaic in the U.S. It also formed partnerships with Novozymes to combine microbial solutions with its fertilizers and with ATP Nutrition for distribution in Canada. Despite raising over $300 million in funding, including a $65.5 million Series D round in 2022, Anuvia Plant Nutrients suspended operations and began liquidating its assets in May 2023, citing a challenging capital environment.
