Beijing-based ANTVR Technology emerged in the virtual reality space, later pivoting to focus on augmented reality optics. The company was founded in 2014 by Qin Zheng, who, as a passionate hardware hacker, dropped out of his PhD program in space technology to develop an open-source virtual reality headset. His journey began in 2012, building a prototype with 3D printing and DIY tools, leading to initial Chinese investment in 2013.
ANTVR's business model initially revolved around the direct sale of hardware to consumers (B2C). The company's first major milestone was a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014, which raised over $260,000 for its inaugural VR headset kit. This kit was designed for cross-platform compatibility, aiming to work with PCs, gaming consoles, and Android devices, setting it apart from competitors like Oculus which required specifically designed games. The original product line included the ANTVR headset, a transformable controller that could function as a gamepad or gun, and a lower-cost mobile VR goggle called 'Jitao' that used a smartphone as the screen. The company also collaborated with Lenovo to release a bundled VR headset with their smartphones in markets like India, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
Over the years, ANTVR launched a second generation of VR headsets under the 'Cyclop' label in 2017 and then ventured into augmented reality with the 'Mix' AR glasses in 2018, which was also funded via Kickstarter. The Mix AR glasses featured a 96-degree field of view and were compatible with SteamVR applications, allowing users to experience VR games in an AR context. The device could be switched between AR and VR modes by attaching a visor. Despite these efforts, the company faced financial difficulties and significantly reduced its staff around 2019. Subsequently, the firm rebranded to Ant Reality and shifted its strategy from manufacturing headsets to licensing its advanced optical technology. This new focus culminated in the development of a 'Mixed Waveguide' AR optics system capable of a 120-degree field of view and instantly switching between AR and VR. In a significant development, Ant Reality was reportedly acquired by Google in late 2023, with the tech giant gaining control of its patent portfolio.
