About ANTs Software

Today's story is about a company with a history as long and complex as its name changes. It begins in 1979, not as ANTs, but as Sullivan Computer Corporation, founded to build a supercomputer based on the CHoPP architecture developed by Herbert Sullivan. The goal was to revolutionize parallel processing. By 1986, the company was known as CHoPP Computer Corporation. The first major pivot came in February 1999, during the dot-com boom, when the company rebranded to ANTs software.com. ANTs stood for Asynchronous Nonpreemptive Tasks. This move signaled a shift from hardware to software, focusing on a high-performance database product called the ANTs Data Server. This era was marked by extreme volatility. The company's stock, trading on the OTC Bulletin Board, saw incredible price swings. At one point, Chairman Donald Hutton commented on the speculative nature of the trading, even as the company issued warnings about its own financial stability. Despite the turbulence, ANTs persisted. Led by CEOs like Frank Ruotolo and later Joseph Kozak, the company commercially released its database server in 2005 and secured a significant OEM agreement with IBM. This provided a new life, focusing on reducing IT costs and improving database performance for large customers. The final chapter saw a re-acquisition of the ANTs Data Server in 2013, capping a decades-long journey of technological evolution and reinvention.
