About Andes Networks

Andes Networks, founded in 2000 and formerly known as Beeline Networks, operated in the cybersecurity and TMT sectors, specializing in web security. The company was led by President and CEO Paul Gordon. Before its acquisition, the firm successfully raised $30 million in capital from investors including Infinity Group, PacRim Venture Partners, VantagePoint Capital Partners, and Western Technology Investment. A significant funding round in February 2001, led by VantagePoint Venture Partners, secured $22 million, which included an investment from Sun Microsystems.

The core business of Andes Networks was the provision of a next-generation SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) acceleration platform. This platform was designed for internet data centers to manage and speed up encrypted web traffic. The company developed and sold ASIC-based web security products that enabled the secure and efficient delivery of web content, applications, and online transactions. The objective was to help clients mitigate risks associated with poor website performance and enhance security by making encryption more accessible and affordable.

Andes Networks' flagship product was an SSL accelerator system, a physical appliance that decoded incoming encrypted traffic and encrypted outgoing traffic. At the heart of this system was a proprietary SSL processor called the Zoo chip. The company's value proposition was to offer a system capable of handling a high volume of SSL handshakes per second at a significantly lower price point than competing solutions, with the ambitious goal of enabling 100 percent encrypted traffic on the internet. In January 2003, Andes Networks was acquired by Sun Microsystems, marking the conclusion of its journey as an independent entity.
