About Amphenol
You’ve probably never seen an Amphenol product, but it’s almost certain you’ve used one today. The company is a titan in the world of connectors and cables—the critical, unseen components that enable everything from your phone and car to data centers and airplanes. If it plugs in or sends a signal, there’s a good chance Amphenol had a hand in it. This is the story of how a small Chicago startup became the hidden infrastructure of the electronic age. The story begins in 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, when an entrepreneur named Arthur J. Schmitt founded the American Phenolic Corp. His first product was an innovative tube socket for radios, using a durable plastic called phenolic instead of brittle ceramic. This small innovation solved a major manufacturing headache for the booming radio industry. When World War II broke out, the company pivoted to become a primary manufacturer of electrical connectors for military aircraft and radios, establishing a reputation for reliability under extreme conditions. After the war, Amphenol expanded into components for televisions and computers. The company went public for the first time in 1957. The following decades saw a series of complex corporate maneuvers, including being part of Bunker-Ramo Corporation and later Allied Corp. A pivotal moment came in 1987 when LPL Investment Group acquired the company in a leveraged buyout. This led to a renewed focus and a second, more enduring IPO in 1991 on the New York Stock Exchange. Since then, Amphenol's strategy has been defined by relentless and strategic acquisition, purchasing dozens of companies to expand its reach into nearly every technology market imaginable: automotive, aerospace, mobile networks, and industrial applications. Today, Amphenol stands as a diversified, global powerhouse, a quiet giant whose components form the essential nervous system of our connected world.
