About Amperex Technology
Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) is a key player in the global lithium-ion battery sector, specializing in the research, development, and high-volume manufacturing of rechargeable battery cells and packs. Founded in 1999 by Robin Zeng, the company established its headquarters in Hong Kong and manufacturing base in Dongguan, China. Zeng, who holds degrees in engineering and a PhD in physics, identified the market potential for lightweight lithium polymer batteries and licensed technology from Bell Labs to begin production for devices like laptops and MP3 players.
The company's business model is centered on supplying customized, high-performance battery solutions directly to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Its client base consists of world-renowned brands in consumer electronics, including smartphones, tablets, and notebooks, as well as specialists in drones, robots, power tools, and VR/AR devices. Revenue is generated through the large-scale sale of these battery products. A significant milestone occurred in 2005 when ATL was acquired by the Japanese electronics group TDK for approximately $100 million, a move that fueled its expansion, particularly into the smartphone market where it became a supplier for major companies like Apple and Samsung. Zeng continued to manage the company post-acquisition.
ATL's product portfolio is extensive, offering batteries characterized by high energy density, fast-charging capabilities, and the ability to function across a wide temperature range. A notable offering is the design and production of arbitrary-shaped cells, allowing for greater flexibility in product design for its clients' devices, such as wearables and smart home technology. The company provides comprehensive system integration, encompassing everything from materials and structural design to manufacturing processes and battery management systems. In 2011, recognizing the distinct requirements of the electric vehicle market, ATL's EV battery division was spun off to create Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), which has since become a global leader in its own right.
