Amicas
Radiology, and medical image and information management solutions in the united states
About Amicas
In the late 1990s, the healthcare industry was on the cusp of a digital transformation, and Amicas was born right into the heart of it. Founded by Frederick L. Fine and James K. Price, the company focused on creating software for the growing field of medical imaging. Their core business was building Picture Archiving and Communication Systems, or PACS, and radiology information systems. These tools became essential for hospitals and imaging centers, allowing them to manage and view digital medical images like X-rays and MRIs, moving away from cumbersome physical film. The company carved out a significant niche, providing a comprehensive suite of solutions for both radiology and cardiology departments. As the importance of electronic medical records grew, Amicas positioned its technology as a key component for powering the imaging part of a patient's digital file. A major turning point for Amicas came in March 2010 when it announced it would be acquired by Merge Healthcare. The deal came after a bidding situation where Merge Healthcare made a superior offer to a previously accepted agreement with a private equity firm. The acquisition was finalized in April 2010 for approximately $248 million. This event marked the end of Amicas as a standalone public company on the NASDAQ but integrated its technology into a larger healthcare IT portfolio, expanding its reach to more hospitals and clinics worldwide.
