Altitun
Provider of the world’s most complete tunable laser product line
About Altitun
Altitun AB was a Swedish company rooted in the deep-tech landscape of the late 1990s, specializing in optical components. Founded in 1997 by five researchers from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, the firm emerged as a key player during the city's optical technology boom. The company's core business was the development and manufacturing of tunable semiconductor lasers designed for fiber-optic telecommunications. These lasers were a critical enabling technology, allowing telecom providers to increase the capacity of their high-bandwidth networks while aiming to reduce operational costs.
Altitun's product line was centered on variable-wavelength lasers, which offer the flexibility to dynamically allocate and re-assign wavelengths within a fiber-optic network. This capability was instrumental for next-generation optical networks, facilitating functions like wavelength services and bandwidth on demand. The company distinguished itself by being the first to commercially ship a tunable laser and to offer an integrated electronics control package, simplifying management and integration for its clients, which were primarily telecommunications systems vendors. By providing this technology, Altitun helped network carriers manage the escalating demand for bandwidth driven by the internet's growth.
The company's trajectory was marked by a significant financial milestone in May 2000, when it was acquired by the US-based ADC Telecommunications for approximately $872 million. This all-stock deal represented a major validation of European technology in the optical communications sector. At the time of the acquisition, Altitun had around 45 employees. Following the acquisition, the business was intended to continue its operations in Sweden. However, the company was later divested by ADC and eventually shut down, with parts of its activities transitioning to a new entity called Syntune. The story of Altitun is often cited as an example of the rise and fall of the IT bubble in the early 2000s.
