AllStripes operates as a healthcare technology company focused on accelerating research for rare diseases. It was founded in 2017, originally as RDMD, by CEO Nancy Yu and technologist Onno Faber. The inspiration for the company came from Faber's personal experience with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), a rare disease, and the subsequent frustration with the lack of information and slow pace of drug development. Yu, with a background in biology and finance from the University of Pennsylvania and experience at 23andMe and in biotech investment banking, joined forces with Faber to empower patients in the research process.

The company's core business revolves around a technology platform designed to generate regulatory-ready evidence for rare disease research. AllStripes provides a patient-facing application that allows individuals and their families to securely participate in research from home at no cost. The platform collects and de-identifies participants' medical records from various healthcare facilities, structuring the information into comprehensive datasets. This real-world evidence is then made available to life sciences partners, including pharmaceutical companies, biotechs, and academic researchers, to support various stages of drug development, from clinical trial design to post-market studies. This model aims to address the significant challenge that only about 5% of the over 7,000 known rare diseases have approved treatments.

Significant milestones for the company include raising $50 million in a Series B financing round in August 2021, led by Lux Capital, to expand its research programs and global operations. AllStripes has established partnerships with numerous patient advocacy organizations and life science companies like Novartis and UCB Biopharma. In October 2023, AllStripes was acquired by PicnicHealth, a patient-centered healthcare evidence generation company. This strategic consolidation aims to combine AllStripes' expertise in rare diseases with PicnicHealth's broader platform, enhancing their collective ability to generate patient-centric real-world data for a wider range of conditions.
