ALDEA Pharmaceuticals
ALDEA Pharmaceuticals develops small-molecule modulators of the ALDH family for the treatment of toxic aldehyde-related diseases
About ALDEA Pharmaceuticals
Founded in 2008 by Che-Hong Chen, Daria Mochly-Rosen, and Wenjin Yang, ALDEA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. operated as a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing treatments for diseases linked to toxic aldehydes. The company's core strategy revolved around developing small-molecule modulators for the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzyme family. This proprietary scientific approach was initially discovered by researchers at Stanford University and was exclusively licensed to ALDEA.
ALDEA's business model was centered on the research and development of therapeutic candidates to address unmet medical needs in various areas. The company aimed to tackle conditions associated with toxic aldehydes, which accumulate in the body and cause damage. One of its primary development programs was for a lead drug candidate, AD-6626. This compound was designed to activate the ALDH enzyme, thereby accelerating the metabolism and detoxification of harmful aldehydes.
The company's pipeline included potential treatments for clinically significant acute alcohol toxicity and the rare genetic disorder, Fanconi anemia. For acute alcohol intoxication, an intravenous formulation of AD-6626 was intended for use in emergency room settings to more rapidly alleviate symptoms and facilitate patient care. An oral version of the same drug was being studied for its potential to help patients with Fanconi anemia. By targeting the ALDH enzyme, ALDEA sought to offer new product opportunities across multiple therapeutic areas by enhancing the body's natural detoxification pathways. In August 2014, the company announced it had secured $24 million in a Series B financing round to advance AD-6626 into clinical trials. The round included investors such as Canaan Partners, Correlation Ventures, RusnanoMedInvest (RMI), and WuXi PharmaTech. However, reports indicate the company is now out of business.
