Akasa Air, operated by SNV Aviation Private Limited, is an Indian low-cost carrier headquartered in Mumbai. It was founded by aviation veterans Vinay Dube and Aditya Ghosh, with significant backing from the late billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who held a 46% stake. The airline was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period when reduced aircraft rental costs and greater availability of aviation professionals presented a unique opportunity.

The founding team possesses extensive experience in the aviation sector. CEO Vinay Dube previously held chief executive roles at Jet Airways and GoAir (now Go First) and spent nearly three decades in leadership at American Airlines, Sabre Inc., and Delta Air Lines. Co-founder Aditya Ghosh was formerly the President of IndiGo for a decade, where he was instrumental in its growth to become India's largest airline, and also served as CEO for OYO Hotels & Homes in South Asia.

Akasa Air launched its first commercial flight on August 7, 2022, connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The airline operates on a low-cost carrier (LCC) model, focusing on operational efficiency and affordability to serve both metro-to-metro routes and connections to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities in India. Its business model prioritizes high asset utilization and maintaining a single-type fleet of modern, fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to keep costs low. Revenue is generated through ticket sales, ancillary services like pre-booked meals from 'Café Akasa', and a growing cargo business.

The airline has expanded rapidly, growing its fleet and network to serve over 23 domestic and 5 international destinations, including Doha, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi, as of mid-2025. Akasa Air has firm orders for 226 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, signaling its long-term growth ambitions.
